For example, you might have seen these red dots on leaves of maples or lime/linden trees. But did you know that they are produced by tiny mites (Eriophyes tiliae or similar) that bite into the leaves, causing the leaves to produce galls in response?

К примеру, знали ли вы, что красные точки на листьях клёна или липы вызваны крошечными клещями, которые, прокусывая поверхность листа, заставляют его наращивать галлы.

Or that oak apples aren't apples either - these are caused by chemicals injected by the larvae of tiny gall wasps (Biorhiza pallida) that feed on the gall while they mature. By the way, oaks are rich in tannin, and with the magic of chemistry, after fermentation with iron sulphate you can get high-quality ink from oak galls that has been used for centuries (and is featured in one of my favourite animations - the Secret of Kells).

Или что эти "орешки" на листьях дуба - совсем не орешки, а галлы, вызванные химической реакцией на выделения личинок галловых ос. Кстати, дуб богат танинами или, как их ещё называют, дубильными веществами, которые, благодаря магии химии, в смеси с сульфатом железа образуют чернила высокого качества, использовавшиеся для письма на протяжении веков (даже герои моего любимого мультфильма "Тайна Келлс" использовали их для создания своей сказочной книги).

Normally, the galls are not dangerous for the tree - you can see it as an allergic reaction to some aggressors. At the same time, it is a signal of lowered immune system of the tree, so one should think about the cause, rather than drown the tree in pesticides, which might not even be effective, since the pests are safe inside the galls.

Обычно галлы не представляют серьёзной угрозы деревьям - это своеобразная аллергическая реакция. Другое дело - понять причину ослабления иммунитета дерева, вместо того, чтобы заливать его всякой химией, которая к тому же не особо эффективна, так как вредители зищищены оболочкой галла.
